Hand turned from a spectacular piece of Amboyna burl, this shallow winged bowl is packed with the intricate swirling grain, eyes and natural figuring that make this timber so highly prized.
Rather than turning away the irregular outer edge of the burl, I retained it to form the wide natural wings surrounding the central bowl. This preserves much more of the character of the original piece of wood, including its uneven edges, small voids, knots and natural colour variations.
The shallow central bowl contrasts beautifully with the highly figured wings, while the underside continues to display the dense burl pattern. It is very much a decorative piece where the wood itself is the main feature.
As with all natural burl pieces, the irregularities, small openings and imperfections are part of the timber's character rather than defects.
