This sculptural bowl is turned from a rare Macassar Ebony burl — a prized exotic timber known for its dramatic tonal contrast, swirling figure and dense, glassy texture. Burl specimens of this size are seldom available and are usually reserved for fine instrument work, knife scales and luxury inlays. As such, a turned piece of this scale is highly unusual.
The form is contemporary and understated, allowing the wood to take centre stage. The swirling patterns, small eyes and natural voids are all characteristic of true burl formation, where the tree’s growth becomes complex and unpredictable. When viewed under shifting light, the wood reveals layers of warm cocoa, bronze, and deep espresso tones.
Turned for my YouTube channel and signed on the base for provenance. Suitable as a sculptural display piece or as a centrepiece for contemporary interiors. A true one-off — neither the blank nor the resulting patterning can ever be reproduced.
