This sculptural bowl has been hand-turned from a gnarly apple burl, celebrating the tree’s unusual growth patterns rather than hiding them. Apple is a rarely encountered turning wood in pieces of this size, and burl sections are especially coveted for their swirling grain, tight figure, and organic surface texture.
The outer rim has been left in its raw, natural form, revealing clusters of burl nodules and pockets of bark-inclusion that catch the light and invite touch. The interior contrasts with a smooth, refined turning that opens up the complex heartwood tones that apple is known for — honeyed ambers, russet browns and subtle blushes of red.
This is a one-off piece made for my YouTube channel. It suits display as a sculptural centrepiece, but can also be used as a functional shallow bowl for dry items. Like all burl work, it can never be replicated — the shape and figuring are entirely determined by the tree.
